“Our initial focus is to bring all the players together, find that chemistry, and start working as a cohesive unit,” Cassar explained. The team’s approach is centered around blending youthful energy with experienced leadership, a strategy that the coach believes will foster development and success. “We were looking for young players who want to learn, and at the same time, experienced players who can lead the team on the pitch.”

Cassar emphasized the importance of balancing enthusiasm with wisdom, allowing the younger players to grow while being guided by seasoned professionals. “Team spirit and responsibility are key, and we’re working to create positive relationships among the squad, technical staff, and everyone involved in the club.”

A Steady Learning Process

Having completed six weeks of intense pre-season training in Malta’s challenging summer heat, the squad is showing signs of progress. However, the journey has not been without its hurdles. “In the early weeks, we faced some inconsistencies,” said Cassar. “Our squad wasn’t fully available, and some players had difficulty adapting to the new game model we’re implementing.”

Despite these initial challenges, the coach remains optimistic. “In the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen significant improvement. The learning processis moving forward, and the players are beginning to understand our principles of play. It’s a slow process, but we’re confident that we’re on the right track.” 

Strengths, Weaknesses, and Opportunities

Like any ambitious team, Zurrieq FC faces both strengths and weaknesses. Cassar believes the team’s diversity is one of its biggest assets. “We have a good mix of players who were already part of the club and new faces. This gives us the opportunity to develop a strong mindset and identity as a team.”

However, the integration of new players has also posed challenges. “Our main weakness right now is convincing the new players that our approach to football is the right one. It takes time to persuade them and to build trust in our methods.”

Despite these challenges, Cassar sees immense opportunity for growth.“We’re not just thinking about this season; we’re already building the foundation for next season. This is a long-term project, and we’re working hard every day to ensure we develop into a strong and competitive team.”

A Vision for the Future

As the season unfolds, Zurrieq FC has its sights set high. “We definitely want to play good football,” Cassar asserted. “But in competitive football, it’s ultimately about results. Our objective is to finish in the upper part of the league table and, hopefully, compete with the top clubs.”

Although other teams may have more resources, Cassar isn’t deterred.“What matters most is our development. We want to create an identifiable playing style that will lead us to success.” 

Confidence in Hard Work

Cassar’s confidence in his team’s ability to achieve these goals stems from the hard work of the entire coaching staff. “The technical director and I put in countless hours on and off the pitch. We work tirelessly to plan training sessions and ensure our players are getting the best possible guidance.That work ethic gives me confidence, and we want to instill that same belief in our players.”
